More about the Arrokoth
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has recently been renamed the farthest cosmic body, formerly known as ‘Ultima Thule’ to ‘Arrokoth’ or Sky.
NASA has renamed the distant space rock after being criticized in the name of the old Nazi connections. The object will now be known as Arrokoth, Native American term meaning ‘Sky’.it surveyed by a NASA spacecraft for the New Horizons mission.
About Arrokoth (Ultima Thule)
The International Astronomical Union and the Minor Planet Center, the global body for naming Kuiper Belt objects have been given this name.
It was discovered in 2014 by the Hubble Space Telescope, which is operated by the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore.
NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft flew by the ice masses of snow figured in December 2018, about 1.6 billion kilometers beyond Pluto.
New Horizons of the NASA team suggested the name to the International Astronomical Union and the Minor Planet Center. For New Horizons team took several months to complete this name.
The team received approval from the elders of the Powhatan tribe to assign to successfully discovered a new “baby” them. On the New Horizons mission, NASA’s New Horizons mission launched in January 2006.
After crossing Pluto in 2015, in 2019 it was flying with Arrokoth. It remains a “flyby furthest ever done.”
Located in the Kuiper belt in the outer regions of the solar system.
Measures approximately 30 km in diameter, and irregularly shaped.
It has a reddish color, may be caused by exposure to hydrocarbon sunlight for billions of years.
It belongs to a class of objects called the Kuiper Belt “classical cold”, which has a nearly circular orbit with a low inclination for a solar plane.
New Horizons Mission
Launched on January 19, 2006 and conduct flyby studies of six months long reconnaissance of Pluto and its moons in summer, 2015.
The primary mission is to conduct flyby studies of Pluto system. Secondary missions to fly and study of one or the other Kuiper Belt objects more (Kuiper).
