What are the Principles of probity?

The principles of probity (Latin: honestas) are the values, behavior standards, and ethical norms that are essential in order to uphold the tradition of a given institution. “Probity” is sometimes used as an umbrella term covering all aspects of responsible management. In this context it encompasses the honesty and impartiality of a company’s dealings with its employees and in its public statements as well as avoiding conflicts of interest, bribery, cronyism, nepotism etc.

While the doctrine and the principles of probity are clear and well defined, giving a concrete
shape to implement them is the task of the government.

Probity is the formal, authorized, and approved behavior or attitude expected of personnel in public service. It is operating within the framework of laws that apply to the public good as opposed to individual or private gain. The term derives from the Latin adjective probus defining “a good mind” or “a good heart” and was in use during ancient Roman times. Contemporary society relies on trustworthy individuals who will correctly perform their duties with high standards of honesty and integrity. The concept of probity is central to establishing and maintaining civic trust.

Probity is important. The existence of integrity and fairness in the governance of a society, institution and its members, as well as within individuals, is highly valued. Trust and confidence in human relations are thereby earned. Characterized by adherence to professional standards, such as codes of ethics or professional responsibility, probity is regarded as a virtue which contributes to overall success and economic prosperity.
