Gig workers have it tough out there. If low hourly pay was a worry, rising fuel prices are making things difficult for, say, a delivery executive. But something else has come up. Patient care at home or hospitals offers better pay, more respect, and fixed working hours. This emerging sector is helping expand the gig economy.

In the wee hours, Mohit Sharma, a 25-year-old graduate, sets out on food-delivery rounds to Delhi’s late-nighters, whose hunger pangs have forced them to order online after midnight.
