Who is  Mirabai Chanu ?

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu (born August 8, 1994) is an Indian weightlifter. She won the silver medal in the women’s 49 kg competition at the Tokyo Olympics and won India’s first medal in the event. Since 2014, Chanu has regularly participated in the 48kg class in international events and won many medals in the World Championships and Commonwealth Games. The Indian government awarded him the Lotus Medal in recognition of his contribution to sports. He received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award from the Government of India in 2018.

What are her earlier achievements?

Chanu had won the silver medal in the women’s 48 kg weight class at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Glasgow; she went on to break the games record en route to the gold medal at the 2018 edition of the event held in Gold Coast. Her biggest achievement came in 2017, when she won the gold medal at World Weightlifting Championships held in Anaheim, United States.

Mirabai Chanu Career

Chanu’s first major breakthrough came from the Glasgow Edition of the Commonwealth Games; he won the 48kg silver medal. Chanu qualified for the women’s 48kg class at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. However, she failed to complete the event because she failed to lift her three clean and jerk attempts. In 2017, she set a record of 194 kg and won the gold medal in the women’s 48 kg class.

 In the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, he became the first Indian weightlifter to win a silver medal in the Olympics, and won the silver medal with a total weight of 202 kg in the 49 kg class. Chanu lifted a total of 202 kg in the women’s 49 kg class, becoming the second Indian weightlifter to win an Olympic medal after Kanan Maleswari. Mirabai Chanu successfully set a new Olympic record with 115 kg of clean and jerk.
